HE LAUNCH OF GOOD MEN CAMPAIGN

The launch of Good Men Campaign was chaired by H. E. Sy Define, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs at Raffle Re-Royal Hotel on December 09, 2011.

The Good Men campaign is a nation-wide communication initiative that targets boys and men throughout Cambodia. Its slogan is ‘Good men give value to women’. The ‘Good Men’Campaign focuses on primary prevention or stopping violence before it starts. Its ultimate goal is to end violence against women and girls in Cambodia by promoting gender equitable behaviours amongst men.

GOOD MEN THEATRE PERFORMANCES

The objectives of the theatre performances are to create entertainment as well as to provide learning opportunities at community levels, especially in areas where access to mass media is low. The theatre piece, developed by the NGO Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) involves a team of 18 persons: 10 artists, 2 musicians 4 technicians and 2 drivers. The play is starting with songs to better capture the attention of the audience. The scenario is based on the themes of the campaign and the play is very visual. The performance is played at night (from 19.30 to 21.00) at the level of districts, currently in the provinces of Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Stung Treng and Kratie. Each performance usually gather around 500 people.

GOOD MEN CONCERT IN TAKHMAO, KANDAL PROVINCE

Good Men Concert rocked Takhmao Town, Kandal Provinces on December 09, 2011 with   famous singer, Meas Soksophea, fabulous CTN comedian team, and lots of enjoyable and educational games with gifts for the audiences who came to play on the state. Over 6,000 audiences came to see the concert and received Good Men educational posters, and stickers.

Some paintings

to contribute to the reduction of Violence Against Women in Cambodia by transforming gender norms, art exhibition under a Gender theme is used to mainstream knowledge to Cambodian people. These artworks were produced by 20 artists from Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) and it is a part of the GOOD MEN CAMPAIGN. The Good Men Campaign is directed at Cambodian males aged 15 to 49. The campaign is chaired by Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA), coordinated by PAZ Y DESARROLLO (PyD) and supported by over 20 national and international NGOs and also UN-agencies.

These artworks have been ongoing exhibited in 11 provinces in Cambodia.

1. Art Exhibition in Battambang

Around 400 students were gathering in the launch  and to see the Good Men Art Exhibition under a theme of GENDER at Battambang University on December 12, 2011. The artworks were created by more than 20 young artists from Phare Ponleu Selpak. Maculinity, violence against women and gender equality campaign through these visual and creative artworks is a part of The GOOD MEN Campaign and contribute partly to the reduction of Violence Against Women in Cambodia.

Ministry of Women’s Affairs organizes a one-day forum on Gender-Based Violence under the Theme “Good Men” at Arunrus Hotel in Kampong Thom today Thursday 16th August. The opening of this event is presided over by H.E. Khieu Serey Vuthea, Director of the Directorate of Social Development of MoWA, H.E. Hourn Vannith, Kampong Thom Vice Provincial Governor, and representative of Paz Y Desarrollo (PyD) and donors.

Over 50 civil servants of Women’s Affairs Provincial Departments and District Offices from four provinces including Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Oudor Meanchey, and Prah Vihea are gathered in the event.

H.E. Khieu Serey Vuthea says that this forum has an objective to strengthen capacity of civil servants of MoWA at sub-national levels to fully understand about the Good Men Campaign (National Campaign of MoWA) and design campaign activities and plans to be implemented.  She clarifies that the aim of the Good Men campaign is to encourage men in the communities to have positive attitude and behavior to be good men in response to Violence Against Women issues and for gender equality in Cambodia.

H.E. Hourn Vannith mentions that violence against women cannot be eliminated if without involvement of men; therefore, prevent them from committing violence against women by encouraging to have positive attitude and behaviour is the best approach since most case of violence against women that have already happened, the perpetrators are men.

H.E. Khieu Serey Vuthea  requests to the participants that after this forum, participants will be able to implement campaign’s designed activities and use provided materials effectively and men in their community will become good men within this intervention.
